Certain sorts of food are recommended in the Bhagavad Gita to assist us to stay in a state of kindness after eating them. Lord Krishna, according to the Gita, told us about the implications of consuming certain foods. What we consume has a direct impact on both our bodies and minds. Many of us seldom consider how food affects our bodies.
Lord Krishna outlines three types of food in the Gita: food that is good (Sattvic), food that is passionate (Rajasic), and food that is ignorant (Tamasic).
The necessity of eating in our daily lives is highlighted several times in the Bhagavad Gita. The types of food we eat have a direct effect on our mind and soul, according to Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, our choice reflects our personality. The objective of food is to extend life, purify the mind, and strengthen the body.
Lord Krishna responded, "There are three sorts of natural faith in embodied beings: goodness, passion, and ignorance."
People in the Sattvic mode worship heavenly controllers, whereas those in the Rajasic mode worship supernatural rulers and demons, and those in the Tamasic mode worship ghosts and spirits.
Every human being is born with a natural religion, which might be one of three types: Sattvic (mode of goodness), Rajasic (mode of passion), or Tamasic (mode of ignorance). This person's personality is inextricably linked to their diet or vice versa.
People nowadays talk about good nutrition, keto diet, and a variety of other diets, but they ignore Lord Krishna's statement in the Bhagavad Gita concerning three sorts of food.
Food Categories
According to the Bhagavad Gita, there are three varieties of food: Sattvic, Rajasic, and Tamasic.
Sattvic Food
The foods that promote longevity, virtue, strength, health, happiness, and joy, according to Lord Krishna, are juicy, smooth, substantial, and nutritious. Such foods appeal to people who are in a pleasant mood.
The key to total health is mental wellness. Sattvic cuisine will provide you with a calm mind, good health, long life, and a good mood all of the time. The supremacy of Sattvic food is due to the fact that it is easy to digest and keeps your mood and body at ease when consumed. It will not alter your physical state because the food is smooth and juicy with no odour.
Sattvic foods, according to sloka, improve life span (ayuh) and willpower (sattva), as well as physical strength, disease resistance, and happiness. In the form, the meal should be juiced. In this situation, the sattvic diet should be moderate and greasy (Snigdha). Sattvic diet has a long-lasting (sthira) effect on the body as a benefit. Sattvika cuisine is good for the heart (hrdya), stomach, and other internal organs.
Rajasic Food
People in the mode of passion favour things that are bitter, sour, salty, hot, pungent, dry, and scorching, and bring pain, grief, and disease, according to the Bhagavad Gita.
Mental health is more vital than physical health in order to live a happy and tranquil life. The food you eat reflects your inner state for a healthy mind. Foods prepared in the style of goodness are pure and provide a feeling of happiness without altering your attitude. This can be sensed realistically by just beginning to eat Sattvic food and experiencing the essence of natural food.
Rajasic people prefer food that is exceedingly bitter (katu), very sour, very salty, and very hot, which is why it is named Rajasic food. Rjasic food is a type of food that has a rjasic flavour. Tumeric root and other ingredients, as well as pepper, are very sharp meals (tiksna). Hing and kodrava are both very drying foods (ruksa). Foods that induce internal heat, such as roasted chickpeas, are known as burning foods (vidahinah). Suffering (duhkha), lamentation (soka), and sickness are all caused by these (amayam). The term "suffering" refers to pain in the tongue, throat, or other organs caused by eating. Those foods will bring misery in the future. Amaya is a Greek word that means "sickness."
Tamasic Food
People in the phase of ignorance favour things that are stale, tasteless, putrid, rotting, unclean, and impure, according to the Bhagavad Gita (such as meat and alcohol). (17:10) Bhagavad Gita
God created nector-like meals, but humans poisoned them by adding toxic substances. You will read all over the place that eating Sattvic food can help you spiritually, but this is not true. One must be quite picky about the foods he incorporates into his daily regimen.
Type of Food as per Bhagavad Gita
Lord Krishna now mentions Tamasic cuisine. Stale (Yatayamam) refers to food that has lost its freshness after being stored for an extended period of time. Tasteless (Gatarasam) refers to something that has lost its original flavour. Putrid (Puti) refers to a foul odour. The term "decayed" (Paryusitam) refers to something that has become rancid due to the passage of time. Food that has been left behind after being consumed by anyone other than Gurus, etc. is referred to as refuse (Ucchistam). These foods are unclean (Amedhyam), thus they are unfit for sacrifice or worship.
Lord Krishna elaborated on the many types of food.
Consumption of Saatvic cuisine (as much as feasible) is necessary not only for physical and mental well-being but also for spiritual well-being.
Now there will be a counter-argument that even folks who are accustomed to eating Sattvic food act in a Tama guna-like manner. So, along with the verses, here is the explanation.
Whoever acts in accordance with his or her wishes, defying scriptural injunctions, will never achieve perfection, bliss, or the Supreme Abode.
As Lord Krishna stated, we must adhere to all of the scriptures' teachings in order to get a better scriptural conclusion.
As a result, compared to Rajasic and Tamasic food, Saatvic food will enable you to calm your body and mind so that you may get the most out of the food. Whereas Rajasic and Tamasic foods produce an intoxicating sensation in the body, making it difficult to concentrate on spiritual matters.
