My first visit to Kolkata
Despite Kolkata was once the capital city of India, thought of visiting Kolkata always intimidated me.
The moment my train hit the station, I immediately sensed l'd like ..... no , love this charming, historical and utterly unique city . Delhi and Mumbai in my eyes , Kolkata beat them with its charm, friendliness and an old colonial character.
Spanning the width of the Hoogly river , you have a steel and iron landmark bridge connecting central Kolkata to Howrah station 🚉. Early in the morning you can see people going to their daily worship, taking a bath in the river. A great place for the people watching, you"ll see daily commuters , travellers, and work potters transport goods and big bundle bid goods at all time of day.
When you come to India , you will see a lot because India is truly amazing. Getting there : Sandwiched between the Mullick Ghat Flower 🌸🌸🌹 market and Howrah Train station. You can take one of the many buses enroute to Howrah station and have them drop you near the flower market.
2. Howrah station 🚉
Howrah station is Kolkata' s second largest railway station and one of India's largest. It is said than an estimated more than two million people arrive and depart by howrah station each day .
3. Kalighat temple
Kalighat temple is a main pilgrimage temple for devotees of kali. Being a main site , it is very busy . There vendors and touts trying to usher you in and sell you places to park your shoe 👟 and it is a little too nutty for me now . If you come at night there are lot of festival where you will see a lot of people here and there and lot of shops to go to.
4. Street food
Of Indian cities , Kolkata is a foodie capital best known for its steet food 🍕🌮. You will find food hawkers line the sidewalk with samosa to chai ☕☕, chinsese noodles , chat and ..... A stroll down the street is like a walk down a buffets line . When in kolkata , eating street food is a must .
5. Komorurtli
Komorurtli or the potter's colony of kolkata was by far one of the most fascinating high light of the city for me . The colony is reknown for their production of clay idols of Hindu gods and goddesses. I visited before the big Kali festival , so many sculptures were busy at work sculpturing Kali goddess statue . There are hundreds of 🍯 potter's shop and their work supplies kolkata and exported through out India.
6. Kolay Market /Burabazzar
Opposite to Sealdah station 🚉, Kolay Market sells vegetables in whole sale bundle Products comes from all the parts of India and then gets auctioned off and goes back 🔙 out. Some parcels of products can weigh up to 400kg and four to five persons carry this from the main road 🛣️ off the 🚒🚛 truck and into the market.
